Easier Walks
Appreciate the relaxed pace of life of the local villages on walks along the Vall de Laguart, through terraces of cherry and almond trees. We can also walk through the fragrant orange groves of the Jalon Valley and ascend through the richly vegetated slopes to the splendid coastal summit of Montgó, which rises behind the coastal town of Dénia.
6 to 8 miles on rough and stony paths. Up to 1,800ft of ascent in a day.
Harder Walks
Walks in the Marina Alta mountains could include the dramatic ridges of the Sierra Bernia and Caballo Verde, the latter being the site of the final battle between the Spanish King and the Moors in 1609. We can also follow an ancient Moorish trail as it zig-zags down through a rock arch into the mighty gorge of the Barranco del Inferno below Benimaurell.
7 to 10 miles on steeper rocky paths. Up to 2,650ft of ascent in a day.
On some days the walks start and finish at the hotel. On other days we’ll use the hired transport to explore the surrounding area. The cost of transport to and from the walk is payable locally.
Each week there is a free day when no guided walks are offered. This is an ideal opportunity to relax around the hotel, walk independently, or visit local places of interest.
Benimaurell
The village is tiny, and together the three valley villages of Benimaurell, Fleix and Cambell have a population of just over 900. The village sits at the head of the Vall de Laguart overlooking a dramatic gorge carved by the river known as the Barranco del Infierno. During the 1920’s an attempt was made to dam the river to create a reservoir; however this was not a success as the water just soaked through the porous rock. The dam is still intact and is now referred to as Isbert’s folly, after its designer. Above the village is the jagged Caballo Verde (or green horse) ridge, which in 1609 was the site of the final battle between the Spanish King and the Moorish occupiers.
In Benimaurell you will find just a small bar and an occasional bus down the valley. However, during the week we will visit some of the larger villages and the much larger town of Denia, where you will find banks and shops.
The coach transfer to the Hotel is approx 2 hours. |
