Easier Walks

5 to 8 miles on good paths which can be rough or stony.
Up to 1,800ft of ascent in a day.

The mighty cirque at Gavarnie, a huge natural amphitheatre of cliffs and glaciers, is a local highlight which can be seen up close on our guided walks. More imposing scenery can also be seen at the Pont d’Espagne where we’ll walk beside a succession of cascading waterfalls. We’ll also visit the spa village of Barèges for walks down the green Bastan Valley, rich with butterflies and wild flowers.

Harder Walks

7 to 13 miles with some steep and rough routes. Up to 3,650ft of ascent in a day.

Luz St Sauveur is well-located for exploring the finest mountain scenery in the Pyrenees. Our guided walks include the ascent from Gavarnie to the Horquette d’Alans and in spectacular Cirque de Troumouse, a landscape every bit as good as its more famous neighbour. We may also ascend the Pic d’Aygues Cluses or follow the GR10 path into the Néouvielle National Park.

On some days the walks start and finish at the hotel. On other days we’ll use the hired transport to explore the surrounding area. The cost of transport to and from the walk is payable locally.

Each week there is a free day where no guided walks are offered. This is an ideal opportunity to relax around the hotel, walk independently, or visit local places of interest.

Situated in the heart of the Pyrenees, Luz St Sauveur makes a great base for exploring this region of high mountains and beautiful valleys. The village lies in the Garve Valley which runs north from the dramatic cirque at Gavarnie towards Lourdes. Luz St Sauveur is technically two villages, though the casual observer you’d be hard pressed to detect where one ends and the other begins. To the north is Esquièze-Sère, where our hotel is located, which radiates from its large central square.

Shops & facilities:

The main road crosses a small bridge into Luz St Sauveur itself where most of the shops and facilities are located. This is the older part of the village where the back streets still retain their medieval appearance. In Luz there are a handful of smaller shops, plus a bank, post office and outdoor swimming pool.
